In 1901, Emile Fleury became the first grower in Champagne to replant Pinot Noir after phyloxerra. His son, Robert Fleury, then made the unusual decision to bottle his own champagne in 1929. In the 1970s, Jean-Pierre Fleury became concerned about the effects of chemical agriculture on the environment and began experimenting with manual tilling and composting followed by a trial of biodynamy on 3 hectares of the estate in 1989. Within 3 years he decided to apply those principles to the entirety of his vineyard holdings. In 1993, Gault-Millau elected Jean-Pierre winemaker of the year and the international recognition has continued. it’s the grape varieties that top the bill. Which makes sense, given that they also bear the appellations of the region and that blends aren’t part of the local culture. Does this mean then that the characters of wines from this part of France are defined by its grape varieties alone? That the terroir is irrelevant? Merely a perfectly neutral, silent substrate? Of course not, that would be a very simplistic view! Especially since it would dismissing another important point: Alsace is a great vineyard of terroirs and a vineyard of great terroirs.

51 Grands crus

The Alsace wine-making region has a rather “Chilean” profile, being 120 km (75 miles) from north to south and just a few kilometers from east to west. It is distinguished not only by the charming villages that line its Wine Route, but by its lively and complex geology. So much so that over time, generations of winemakers have identified and ranked some particularly remarkable terroirs. Some are classified as lieux-dits (named plots), and the most exceptional have been elevated to Grand cru status.
There are exactly 51 of them, all with distinct profiles. Some fifteen geological families have been identified, including granite, clay, sandstone, schist, and limestone. Generally located at an altitude of between 200 and 400 meters (between 656 and 1312 feet), the Grands crus, often quite steep, benefit from distinguishing soils as well as exposures and micro-climates that promote slow, consistent grape maturation, which is the reason for the very finely expressed aromas of the wines.

Great diversity

The reason for identifying different areas in this way becomes obvious as soon you taste wines of the same grape variety from two different terroirs. Riesling, for example, is easily recognizable on tasting, but also has a reputation for being a fine indicator of terroir. There’s a world of difference between the bold generosity of a Riesling from the Kaefferkopf Grand cru and the calm intensity, characterized by cleanness and salinity, of the same grape from the very volcanic Rangen Grand cru. More than in some other wine regions, the vineyards of many Alsatian estates are quite parceled up. Which can be quite constraining day to day, especially during the harvest, but is a real boon when it comes to the diversity of wines they can offer. So as you can imagine, great connoisseurs of Alsace wines don’t stop with “I like Riesling” or “I don’t like Gewurztraminer”… When they talk about their preferences, they describe the details of each terroir with relish. Why not do the same?

In past lives Jerôme François was both a carpenter and sommelier. That did not happen. Every year in the vineyard is different, and part of what makes low-intervention wine special is that we strive to highlight and embrace the inconsistencies from year to year instead of trying to homogenize everything. This Pinot is brambley and has some nice reduction on the nose (think evergreen tree, not hydrogen sulfide at all). It tastes like partial whole cluster, but those of you who have been drinking Margins for a while know that I destem all of the reds. While I typically attempt to make wines that are straightforward and easy to enjoy, there is a level of elegant inaccessibility to this wine that was unexpected but welcomed. To pair with that unparalleled guidance, there is a youthful energy and worldly view that is taking the wines and the region to yet again new heights. Sébastien Besson is now the fourth generation of the family to take the helm at Domaine du Penlois, which originated in the 1920's by his great-grandfather Benoît, situated on the small hill called Lancié (nestled in between Morgon, Fleuri, and Moulin-à-Vent). Sébastien's father, Maxence, took over in 1977 and accrued more and more Cru vineyards in the region, giving the Domaine 30 hectares in total. While making sustainably farmed Domaine wines with his father, Sébastien began an eponymous project in 2016. He converted small granite-rich plots on the property to strict organic farming, spanning not only portions of their Village Appellation sites, but parcels of three Crus as well (a total of 7 hectares). With natural fermentations and aging in concrete vats, and a small sulfur addition before bottling, the wines of Sébasten Besson are pure, driven, and remarkable expressions of top Beaujolais.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/besson-2020-lagrume-maceration-blanc-bea.png?v=1731377120
sebastien-besson-la-ptite-bulle-petillant-naturel-750-ml
Sebastien Besson La P'tite Bulle Petillant Naturel (750 ml)

The Sébastien Besson ‘La P’Tite Bulle’ Petillant Natural is a stunning ‘pet-nat’ that comes from the Chardonnay grapes growing on the estate. And though the Muscadet-Sevre et Maine appellation allows for all Muscadet Sur Lie wines to contain 3 grams of residual sugar, and for all others to contain 5 grams, Jean-Pascal first and foremost pushes his fermentations to the end, to yield wines with zero residual sugar that are dry and crisp with high acidity, and suitable for aging. Coming from a family that has worked to maintain and grow its presence in Loire, Jean-Pascal’s great grandfather worked as a vigneron in 1875, when the family’s holdings were at 11ha. Since 1983, Pascal has brought the domaine's holdings up to 84 ha., including 35 ha. of the acclaimed Clos de l'Audigere, which sits on gabbro soil, a form of ancient volcanic rock that allows the vines to dig deep, picking up nutritional components along the way. By purchasing only smaller vineyards that are directly connected to his current vineyards, Pascal could keep the fruit as close to the winery as possible, to maintain its freshness, by avoiding sun contact and bruising, and to keep the grapes cool so that the wine is at its clearest after its been racked from its lees. To maintain this practice, no vineyard is located more than 15km from the winery.

In 2000, Pascal began employing sustainable practices in the vineyard, practicing lutte raisonnée and avoiding chemical usage. Then two years later, Pascal began letting cover-crop grass grow between his rows to help fight mildew, which is a persistent issue, due to their proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. Currently, Pascal is experimenting with organic farming, by working with a 5ha parcel, from the 35ha of Grand Fief de l'Audigere. Started three years ago, it's a project that's still in its infancy because two years ago, there was a mildew problem, created by the vineyard’s proximity to the Atlantic, and so Pascal chose to treat and save the crop, rather than lose his 5ha of fruit.

He starts the fermentation in stainless steel, then transfers the wines to glass-lined underground tanks to let them sit on their lees until he feels they’re ready, creating Muscadets that are aromatically expressive, with striking acidity, minerality and salinity but also with stunning purity of fruit. Overall, he lightly fines and filters his still bottlings to maintain the essence of his terroir, and barely sulfurs at bottling, just enough to keep the wine stable. There is no fining, filtering or sulfuring of the pet'nat and skin-contact cuvees.

He is avowedly non-interventionist, working hard to maintain the health of his soils. And even though he is decidedly traditional, he is not afraid to try new things. So he jumped at the chance to try (and succeed at) making a pet'nat Muscadet as well as a skin-contact Muscadet.

Appellation: Anderson Valley

Vineyard: Filigreen Farm (biodynamic)

Varietal: Pinot Gris

Clone: Clone 4 & 152 on 5BB

Age: Planted 2001

Elevation: 400 feet

Soil: Alluvial with gravel & clay loam

Harvested: 9/15/22

Crushed: 9/15/22

Pressed: 9/19/22

Maceration: From 48 hours to 4 days

Fermentation: Wild yeast & bacteria in concrete and neutral oak barrels.

Barrel aging: 6 months in neutral French oak barrels

Bottled: April 11, 2023

Production: 298 cases

Release date: Fall 2023

In 2014 Tracey began working with the magical, biodynamic Filigreen Farm in the beautiful Anderson Valley.

Tech Sheet

The new EST Swirl is still a blend of Sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, but instead of a rose like in year's past, it's a light red. The weather in 2016 required a lot of attention in the vineyards, but by the time harvest came, the weather spiked and allowed for some very healthy grapes. The fruit was pressed from whole bunches into stainless steel tanks and a very neutral yeast was used to aid in fermentation in order to keep the temperatures very low and the aromatics and phenolics of the wine present. On April 8th, 2017, the wine was bottled and then after 30 months of rest, was disgorged and given a dosage from its own grape’s residual sugar of 6 g/l. The clay and limestone soils are difficult on this hill, and force the vine roots to go very deep for nutrients, therefore showing great elegance and length in the final wine. The wines are aged in the oldest cellar in all of Sant Sadurni d'Anoia, built in 1906, covering 1,285 square meters (928 of which are vaulted galleries that were cut out by hand). These sparkling wines are only Brut Nature, as nothing ever sees a dosage, and the aging regimens for the L'O wines are extreme and long lasting, while the Aire wines are younger and fresher in style, yet remarkably complex and elegant which lives up to the estate's philosophy and standards.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/Untitleddesign_86_1200x_d26de1db-e576-4fc9-ba2d-dc019cd4ea42.webp?v=1694618485
delinquente-bizzarro-aperitivo-750-ml-1
Delinquente Bizzarro Aperitivo (750 ml)

Bizzarro is our take on an all natural, Australian bitter aperitivo, made in our own Delinquente way – scant regard for tradition, all about deliciousness.

We take a neutral grape spirit, infuse it with an array of fruits, herbs and other botanicals, and use this concoction to fortify a dry white wine.

But, of course, we up the flavour ante, using organically grown Riverland oranges and lemons to create an intoxicating citrus hit. In the mid-nineties, Daniel Ansen set out to learn the trade of winemaking, spending time not only in Alsace, but also Australia, the United States, and Bordeaux, where he went to enology school. In 2010 he moved back into the old family house with his wife Karine and took over the fields from his father, looking forward to converting everything to organic viticulture, and starting to make wine from their grapes that had always gone to a local cooperative. Slowly expanding in Alsace’s diverse land, Daniel farms 8.5 hectares, in 40 plots (some are as small as 2 rows of vines), to 8 grape varieties, on 3 different soil types (black clay, limestone, and sandstone). Careful hand harvesting, the use of stainless steel for natural fermentations and aging, and very little (to zero) sulfite use in the finished wines, he lets each grape express their natural characteristics to the fullest, be it laser acidity, sweet ripe fruit, or a combination of both.

"Nature is different every single year, so I don’t want (or expect) to make the same wines every year."
– Daniel Ansen

Tech Sheet
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/ANSEN-PINOT-NOIR_0597a446-97c7-4cb9-9ae1-0fcb339d6028.png?v=1697129468
agri-segretum-cinino-frizzante-2022-750ml
Agri Segretum Cinino Frizzante 2022 (750ml)

The “Cinino” is a Sangiovese Pet-Nat Rosé made by the Agri Segretum winery in the Todi DOC in Umbria, Italy, its name translates to “tiny” or “young one” in the Umbrian dialect to allude to it’s youthful style.

Production: It sees a gentle pressing for the run-off juice which is then transferred to stainless steel to spontaneously ferment with native yeast (about 30 days).
