This is a project born from passion, not born from inheriting vineyards or a cellar. Nelly France is from Brittany (France), Arnaud De Boel is from Belgium, and they met in 2009 in New Zealand where their love for food and wine brought them together and quickly found a love for one another. With their two young children Augustin and Margot, the family chooses biodynamic farming and winemaking, and owns vineyards in the Northern Rhone where they live (in Saint Joseph and Cornas), and some land in the Southern Rhone close to the villages of Suze-la-Rousse and Sainte-Cécile-les-Vignes. They are completely dedicated to the celebration of how food and wine come together in so many magical occasions, and strive to make wine that is meant for the table, meant to enjoy with friends and family, and meant for all of the Bon Vivants of the world; something they can pass on hopefully for generations to come.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/DBF_Voraces_b41def5b-917e-47aa-9195-f35702a7bf1a.jpg?v=1744045467
latue-freak-of-nature-unfiltered-white-2021-750-ml
Latúe 'Freak of Nature' Unfiltered White 2021 (750 ml)

Blend: 85% Verdejo, 15% Sauvignon Blanc
Aging: 5 months in stainless steel tanks

It has a bright yellow color with aromas of tropical fruits and green apple. That did not happen. Every year in the vineyard is different, and part of what makes low-intervention wine special is that we strive to highlight and embrace the inconsistencies from year to year instead of trying to homogenize everything. This Pinot is brambley and has some nice reduction on the nose (think evergreen tree, not hydrogen sulfide at all). It tastes like partial whole cluster, but those of you who have been drinking Margins for a while know that I destem all of the reds. While I typically attempt to make wines that are straightforward and easy to enjoy, there is a level of elegant inaccessibility to this wine that was unexpected but welcomed. Most consumers of wine are only familiar with a handful of grape growing regions and types of wine. Margins draws attention to vineyards and varietals throughout northern and central California that find themselves on the margins without the recognition they deserve.

Part of the Margins mission over the last five years has been to work with small growers to transition their vineyards from conventional to organic farming by providing guidance as well as assurance that the grapes will have a home. We believe that if we worked solely with organic vineyards, we would not be using our role in the industry to its full potential to enact agricultural change. As of vintage 2021, all the vineyards Margins works with are farmed organically.

Margins is a winemaking endeavor of Megan Bell, a winemaker living and working in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Naturally, the final aged wines are exceptional, classic, and will be recognized as some of the greatest Ports available on the market.

Tech Sheet

Appellation: Anderson Valley

Vineyard: Filigreen Farm (biodynamic)

Varietal: Pinot Gris

Clone: Clone 4 & 152 on 5BB

Age: Planted 2001

Elevation: 400 feet

Soil: Alluvial with gravel & clay loam

Harvested: 9/15/22

Crushed: 9/15/22

Pressed: 9/19/22

Maceration: From 48 hours to 4 days

Fermentation: Wild yeast & bacteria in concrete and neutral oak barrels.

Barrel aging: 6 months in neutral French oak barrels

Bottled: April 11, 2023

Production: 298 cases

Release date: Fall 2023

In 2014 Tracey began working with the magical, biodynamic Filigreen Farm in the beautiful Anderson Valley. We took over the farming in 2021, and are delighted to count Chris King and Francisco Ramirez amongst our viticultural gurus. 2021 sees an increase in whole cluster percentages as we continue to harness the tannin structure Alban clone is famous for.

Native ferment, foot-tread daily for 12 days. Kristie’s appreciation of French wines — especially those from Burgundy and the Loire and Rhone valleys — has shaped her winemaking choices.

With a background in microbiology, Kristie is fascinated by the cycle of life; each vintage of Tessier wines captures and reflects one year in the lives of the vineyards she works with. She sources high-quality fruit from a strong network of farmers in the Anderson Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, Arroyo Seco, and El Dorado foothills. She then uses minimal-interventionist winemaking techniques to showcase the unique characteristics of the grapes and the vineyards. For Kristie, sustainability is a priority — not only with the vineyards’ farming practices, but also by having long-term relationships with her growers and customers. The grapes are hand-harvested and then destemmed at the cellar, and then head to a soft pressing before entering concrete for fermentation with the ‘house’ pied de cuve. Paying close attention to the temperature is very important to the winery at this point, to ensure healthy activity as well as locking in wonderful aromatics and varietal character. After natural malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked and then remains in concrete for another 6 to 8 months before a light filtration and bottling. A 3-month rest is required to let the wine meld and relax a bit before release, and then once ready to open, the wine truly sings of the grape and the terroir. The nose is full of honeyed apples, pears, quince, wet stones, and wool, leading to an incredible fuller bodied mouth feel, with acidity-led vibrancy, crisp tree fruit, and extraordinary length. With 38 hectares of vines (primarily around the castle), the winery boasts incredible terroir, with unique schist soils, clay and limestone blends (unique for Anjou), and spots with stones and sand. Since 2017 the estate has been certified in their organic practices that go back much further, and have also committed extensively to agroforestry and bringing new found balance and harmony to the land that has been ‘effected’ by the estate’s presence for centuries; working in different ways like sheep grazing and bringing in bat communities to let nature recreate its ecosystem as much as possible. It is grown at some of the highest elevations in the Rioja Alavesa region. The Tempranillo used in this wine is pulled from the family’s older vineyards, and it comes to the cellar for fermentation in stainless steel. After pressing, the wine is moved to to used French oak barrels for 14 months, and then 4 years in bottle to rest. This Crianza shows gentle yet firm layers of fruits and spices, while mixing with traditional aromas and flavors of La Rioja such as game and leather. The winery dates back to the year 1900 in the medieval town of Laguardia, where the family wines were made in their traditional cellar underneath the town until the construction of their new bodega happened just outside the town walls in 1999. Raimundo and his wife Cristina run the winery today and make remarkable Rioja wines using only fruit from their own family vineyards. The vineyards are tended naturally without the use of artificial fertilizers or pesticides, and the wines are fermented using native yeasts and absolutely minimal filtration (also, all the wines are vegan friendly). This is exceptional Rioja that brings together historic practices in the cellar, while also taking advantage of some more modern techniques, all while offering great value for authentically made wine from an area where large production has become a norm.

Tech Sheet

*Discount price of $24/bt for BTG or 2+ Cases (use code CLIMBER)

80% Merlot , 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot
Appellation Napa Valley
Vineyard Clif Family Valle di Sotto Vineyard
Sustainability B Corp Certified, Organically Farmed, Napa Green Vineyard, Fish Friendly Farming
Aging Program 16 months in 25% new French Oak
Alcohol 14.9%
Harvest Date September 14th - October 12th, 2022
Cases 1431

Tasting Notes
Cabernet aromas of plum, black raspberry, cedar and cinnamon. Once the grapes were brought to the cellar after a hand harvest, they were gently pressed, and the juice was placed in both oak and amphora for natural fermentation. Once complete, there were some months of stirring the gross lees to give great volume to the final wine, giving the ultimate expression of Viura before it was racked and continued its aging (about 10 months total in the two vessels – chosen for different levels of micro-oxygenation). The nose is quite fresh and lively, with crisp fruit, citrus, and yellow flowers shooting forth. The expressive result has a vibrant nose of red fruits, spice, and hints of licorice, while leading to a soft and supple palate of plums, cherries, light herbs, and pepper. This northwestern Spanish red is perfect drinking wine for many foods, as the fresh acidity and soft yet bright fruit is very complementary at the table.

Ronsel do Sil is situated in one of the world’s most extreme grape growing regions, the Ribeira Sacra DO of northwestern Spain. With vineyards planted throughout treacherously steep slopes (ranging from 300 to 700 meters above sea level), all pruning, maintenance, and harvest is carried out by hand on old terraces built by the ancient Romans called Bancales. Maria José Yravedra is an absolute visionary for the region, producing wines that not only show incredible varietal integrity, but she accomplishes this through natural farming and biodynamic principles, making around 45,000 bottles a year from their 10 hectare estate. Her philosophy is based on what she calls ‘heroic’ viticulture, reflecting a sincere balance with nature, through love and compromise with the land. Aside from composting each year with gorse (the last harvest’s prunings and remains), sheep graze the vineyards once a year to add their natural flare and keep excess plants at bay. In the cellar, an absolutely minimal approach is the secret to each perfect bottling, with a gravity flow system instead of pumps, all old wood and concrete use for aging, and very little sulfur additions, letting the native grapes of the area tell their individual story.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/RonseldoSilVel_uveyraMencia_7fab291e-e415-4b0c-bbf9-c74dc14f3085.png?v=1697067602
de-boel-france-les-voraces-rouge-2023-750-ml
De Boel France 'Les Voraces' Rouge 2023 (750 ml)

100% Syrah

Fermentation: Stainless steel, Indigenous yeast

ABV: 12.2%

Biodynamic

‘Les Voraces’ was a revolutionary group from Lyon in 1846 that would travel from canteens to taverns with the claim to lower the price of wine – everywhere they went loudly showing their love for food & wine!

‘Les Voraces’ is a pure expression of Syrah from the northern Rhone in the Collines Rhodaniennes IGP, where only stainless steel is used for fermentation, and a short aging to give as much varietal characteristic as possible. This young vineyard is hand-harvested when the fruit has reached a perfect balance between pH and sugar development, and brought in for a natural fermentation. Smashed blueberries, graphite, rose, and soft meaty aromas fill the glass, leading to a thick palate of small berries, minerals, fresh acid, and a lengthy finish of fruit, anise, and rocks that begs for food.

‘Ars Magirica’ (arts of the chef) was the first written cookbook by the 1st century chef to the emperor, Apicius. Being a mono-varietal Syrah and not a blend, this mix of estate fruit is from both the commune of St. Jean de Muzols (young vines) and Tournon (a vineyard of about fifty years). Each year is harvested by hand when the perfect balance of pH and sugar development is found in the grapes. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel and see regular punch downs for the first week, and then gentle pump overs until complete. Half of the wine remains in tank, and the other half is placed into old French barrique for about a year until it is bottled. The result shows classic black and red fruits on the nose, as well as pork fat and peppercorns, while the palate follows with a deep core of minerality, ripe and fresh fruit, and is lined with spicy acidity.

The ‘Rue de Poulies’ (Pulley Street) no longer exists, but was a road between the Seine and the Louvre in Paris.
