Having spent 18 days on the skins during natural fermentation, the grapes were then gently pressed and returned to the stainless steel until complete (about 25 days total). Moved to both 225L and 500L used barrels, the wine was aged for 6 months before being bottled with only a touch of sulfites and without filtration. To pair with that unparalleled guidance, there is a youthful energy and worldly view that is taking the wines and the region to yet again new heights. Sébastien Besson is now the fourth generation of the family to take the helm at Domaine du Penlois, which originated in the 1920's by his great-grandfather Benoît, situated on the small hill called Lancié (nestled in between Morgon, Fleuri, and Moulin-à-Vent). Sébastien's father, Maxence, took over in 1977 and accrued more and more Cru vineyards in the region, giving the Domaine 30 hectares in total. While making sustainably farmed Domaine wines with his father, Sébastien began an eponymous project in 2016. He converted small granite-rich plots on the property to strict organic farming, spanning not only portions of their Village Appellation sites, but parcels of three Crus as well (a total of 7 hectares). With natural fermentations and aging in concrete vats, and a small sulfur addition before bottling, the wines of Sébasten Besson are pure, driven, and remarkable expressions of top Beaujolais.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/besson-2020-lagrume-maceration-blanc-bea.png?v=1731377120
sebastien-besson-la-ptite-bulle-petillant-naturel-750-ml
Sebastien Besson La P'tite Bulle Petillant Naturel (750 ml)

The Sébastien Besson ‘La P’Tite Bulle’ Petillant Natural is a stunning ‘pet-nat’ that comes from the Chardonnay grapes growing on the estate. With nothing added, except for SO2, and nothing taken away, both time and place mark EST wines.

Tech Sheet

New wine (and new wine series): 50% Chardonnay, 50% Melon de Bourgogne, all from Tuckaway Vineyard in the Elkton AVA.

We're introducing a new remix series, where we combine Chardonnay with other grapes, from the same vineyard. The weather in 2016 required a lot of attention in the vineyards, but by the time harvest came, the weather spiked and allowed for some very healthy grapes. The fruit was pressed from whole bunches into stainless steel tanks and a very neutral yeast was used to aid in fermentation in order to keep the temperatures very low and the aromatics and phenolics of the wine present. On April 8th, 2017, the wine was bottled and then after 30 months of rest, was disgorged and given a dosage from its own grape’s residual sugar of 6 g/l. The clay and limestone soils are difficult on this hill, and force the vine roots to go very deep for nutrients, therefore showing great elegance and length in the final wine. Creamy and delicious Pinot fruit is expressed immediately on the palate with a touch of cherry liqueur and vanilla, while leading to a crunchy stony mid-palate of graceful minerality.

In the northern most hills of the Alsace AOC of eastern France, Domaine Ansen has been a family of grape growers, fruit orchard farmers, cattle raisers, and all things in between, for over 400 years. In the mid-nineties, Daniel Ansen set out to learn the trade of winemaking, spending time not only in Alsace, but also Australia, the United States, and Bordeaux, where he went to enology school. In 2010 he moved back into the old family house with his wife Karine and took over the fields from his father, looking forward to converting everything to organic viticulture, and starting to make wine from their own grapes that had always gone to a local cooperative. Slowly expanding in Alsace's divers land, Daniel farms 8.5 hectares, in 40 plots (some are as small as 2 rows of vines), to 8 varieties, on 3 different soil types (black clay, limestone, and sandstone). Careful hand harvesting, the use of stainless steel for natural fermentations and aging, and very little (to zero) sulfite use in the finished wines, he lets each grape express their natural characteristics to the fullest, be it laser acidity, sweet ripe fruit, or a combination of both.

Tech Sheet

An old river bed with rocky soils and large river stones.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/AlchemyShopifyWinePics_eec43662-f956-42fb-9f23-acdc16768a47.png?v=1702574917
loghi-rosso-di-montalcino-2020-750ml
Loghi Rosso di Montalcino 2020 (750ml)

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is selected from the same 2 hectares of Sangiovese grapes that the Brunello comes from, although the grapes are selected for the Rosso for the softer fruit, and the brighter and fresher side of things. Here, Valentino Berni, who has had 2 other generations to learn from, collects these earthly gems, yet also has an exceptional passion and knack for making beautiful wines and olive oil from their 12 hectares of vineyards and 4 hectares of olive trees. 2 of those hectares of Sangiovese grow in Montalcino only 20km south of the farm, allowing Valentino to make the 2 famous wines of Montalcino (Brunello & Rosso). As to preserve the land for the health of all ‘crops’ that he harvests, Valentino’s farming practices on his sandy clay soils are strictly pristine and completely natural. The methods in the cellar follow this minimal approach from the fields, as Valentino allows natural fermentations for his reds, ages in used barrique and large Slavonic oak as to not impart too much foreign flavor to the wines, and keeps sulfite use to an absolute minimum in order to showcase the grapes. These wine projects, along with exposure to the heart of the American wine industry, slowly revealed to him that less is more. These experiences molded his vision and led him into his current minimal interventionist perspective on winemaking. Francis Mahoney owns the vineyard and has been growing Pinot Noir in Carneros since the late 1960s. We are excited to be able to produce wine from two old California selections of Pinot Noir from such a storied region and a man with more experience and tenure than just about anyone around. The cold and windy Las Brisas Vineyard at the edge of the Carneros appellation produces a Pinot Noir that is all about elegance and delicacy. The wine is produced from the Swan clone and the Gamay Beaujolais clone of Pinot Noir. The former is spicy and savory. The latter is neither Gamay nor from Beaujolais but is a selection of Pinot that was very popular in California decades ago. Sébastien Besson is now the fourth generation of the family to take the helm at Domaine du Penlois, which originated in the 1920’s by his great-grandfather Benoît, situated on a small hill called Lancié (nestled in between Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent). Sébastien’s father, Maxence, took over in 1977 and accrued more and more Cru vineyards in the region, giving the Domaine 30 hectares in total. While making the sustainably farmed Domaine wines with his father, Sébastien began an eponymous project in 2016. Whole cluster fermentation begins naturally after the grapes are placed into both concrete and stainless steel vats for 17 days before a gentle pressing. To pair with that unparalleled guidance, there is a youthful energy and worldly view that is taking the wines and the region to new heights. He converted small granite-rich plots on the property to strict organic farming, spanning not only portions of their Village Appellation sites, but parcels of three Crus as well (a total of 7 hectares). With natural fermentations and aging in concrete vats, and a small sulfur addition before bottling, the wines of Sébastien Besson are pure, driven, and remarkable expressions of top Beaujolais.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/BessonJulienas_73f24d11-c7cb-4b60-af7b-9cf3dd77d4f9.jpg?v=1700061828
uva-de-vida-biografico-tinto-graciano-tempranillo-2022-750-ml
Uva de Vida 'Biográfico Tinto' Graciano/Tempranillo 2022 (750 ml)

80% Graciano 20% Tempranillo

Uva de Vida Biográfico Tinto is made with biodynamically farmed grapes from the estate’s northeast and southeast facing slopes. Since 1843, the Puiggròs family has been producing wines from their own vines in the Odena region of Catalunya for the family and close friends. Over generations they had come to realize that their vineyards and techniques were something exemplary and worth sharing with the world. With a sincere dedication to the terroir or their zone and the indigenous varietals that grow there, they continue to discover ways to unlock all of the magic that lies within their land. Starting with conscious and clean farming in the vineyard, they hand-harvest only the best fruit for their production, and ferment each vineyard separately in varying vessels to accentuate what the vines have to show; some in stainless steel, many in clay amphora of differing sizes. Depending on the batch, the wine goes into top quality oak for extra aging, all the while seeing very little sulfur use if any until bottling. The expressive result has a vibrant nose of red fruits, spice, and hints of licorice, while leading to a soft and supple palate of plums, cherries, light herbs, and pepper. This northwestern Spanish red is perfect drinking wine for many foods, as the fresh acidity and soft yet bright fruit is very complementary at the table.

Ronsel do Sil is situated in one of the world’s most extreme grape growing regions, the Ribeira Sacra DO of northwestern Spain. With vineyards planted throughout treacherously steep slopes (ranging from 300 to 700 meters above sea level), all pruning, maintenance, and harvest is carried out by hand on old terraces built by the ancient Romans called Bancales. Maria José Yravedra is an absolute visionary for the region, producing wines that not only show incredible varietal integrity, but she accomplishes this through natural farming and biodynamic principles, making around 45,000 bottles a year from their 10 hectare estate. Her philosophy is based on what she calls ‘heroic’ viticulture, reflecting a sincere balance with nature, through love and compromise with the land. Aside from composting each year with gorse (the last harvest’s prunings and remains), sheep graze the vineyards once a year to add their natural flare and keep excess plants at bay. In the cellar, an absolutely minimal approach is the secret to each perfect bottling, with a gravity flow system instead of pumps, all old wood and concrete use for aging, and very little sulfur additions, letting the native grapes of the area tell their individual story.

Tech Sheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0727/8755/8673/files/RonseldoSilVel_uveyraMencia_7fab291e-e415-4b0c-bbf9-c74dc14f3085.png?v=1697067602
flavia-etna-rosso-old-vine-nerello-mascalese-2020-1-liter
Flavia Etna Rosso, Old-Vine Nerello Mascalese 2020 (1 Liter)

100% Nerello Mascalese

ABV: 14%

From 20 and 30 year old vines planted at a 3116 feet altitude on sandy volcanic soils. Truly unlike anywhere else in California, Scott Valley in Western Siskiyou County (not to be confused with Scotts Valley) feels like a cross between Switzerland and Montana, cut with a rain shadow from Mount Shasta that divides it starkly between high mountain prairie and dense alpine forests.

Finding ourselves in largely untested grape growing territory, with high elevations and a continental climate, we have turned Iruai into an exploration and celebration of esoteric varieties that flourish in the Alps of Europe. While we work to grow our Scott Valley estate vineyard projects, we purchase fruit and lease vineyards throughout the Shasta-Cascade, from the Trinity Alps of California to the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon.

We seek to make wine with a sense of place by employing no additives, and removing no character. In the cellar, we practice native fermentations and minimal intervention to allow each vineyard to speak for itself. We have selectively chosen organic and sustainably farmed family owned and operated vineyards that are in regions that we feel best express the varietals we love and are inspired by.

Kristie Tacey, winemaker and founder of Tessier Winery, is a scientist turned winemaker. A former published research scientist who studied protein pathways, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from her native Michigan to pursue a career in biotechnology, which included working on the Human Genome Project. Kristie eventually came to realize that winemaking was her true calling and after working as operations manager and assistant winemaker at an award-winning East Bay winery, she started Tessier in 2009.

Tessier is the result of Kristie’s passion for the art and science of winemaking. She began handcrafting small lots of Pinot Noir and has added Grenache, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Gamay Noir, Riesling, Syrah and Mourvedre. Kristie’s appreciation of French wines — especially those from Burgundy and the Loire and Rhone valleys — has shaped her winemaking choices.

With a background in microbiology, Kristie is fascinated by the cycle of life; each vintage of Tessier wines captures and reflects one year in the lives of the vineyards she works with. She sources high-quality fruit from a strong network of farmers in the Anderson Valley, Santa Cruz Mountains, Arroyo Seco, and El Dorado foothills. She then uses minimal-interventionist winemaking techniques to showcase the unique characteristics of the grapes and the vineyards. For Kristie, sustainability is a priority — not only with the vineyards’ farming practices, but also by having long-term relationships with her growers and customers. These small production wines, an annual production of 1400 cases, get unparalleled attention.

Tech Sheet
