Sebastien is close friends with many of the new generation of winemakers in the area, many of whom come from family estates that have been around for generations. While their fathers (typically) carry the famous names, these winemakers are now branching out, maintaining the family domaine while also establishing their own brands. Sebastien is a 4th-generation winemaker at Domaine du Penlois, based in the small village of Lancié, surrounded by the renowned Crus of Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent. His fruit is incredible—an amazing lineup of Chardonnays and, of course, a remarkable range of Gamay that we are honored to represent in the USA. All his wines undergo concrete fermentation, native yeasts, and only a touch of sulfites at bottling. Sebastien’s serious approach to Gamay produces dynamite results. His Nouveau is no exception. Made with naturally carbonic macerated, perfectly farmed fruit, Sebastien’s Nouveau is in a league that competes with any top fresh-style red in France. And that vibrant Gamay character? It leaves you wanting more.
The timing around Nouveau is always nerve-wracking. French law mandates that Nouveau can't be shipped too early—this year, it can't leave France before 8 a.m. on October 22nd. We've fine-tuned our logistics and expect our partners to collect the wine during the week of November 11th (or by Monday the 18th). Since Nouveau can't be sold before the 3rd Thursday of November, most of you should have the wine in hand by November 21st. If there’s a slight delay, trust us, the quality of this Nouveau is worth the wait!
Despite the challenging season this year in France, Sebastien is VERY happy with the start of his Nouveau right now in the cellar. We can’t wait! We hope you’re excited as well.
The 2024 Sébastien Besson Nouveau Beaujolais Villages is a vibrant, fruity, and remarkably fresh example of the gorgeous Gamay fruit that estate grows right outside of the winery in the village of Lancié. Intended for the Nouveau style, the hand-picked fruit comes directly to the cellar for a natural whole-cluster carbonic fermentation in open concrete vats, giving the greatest and fruitiest expression possible, while not being forced and un-interesting like the category’s reputation sometimes holds. The grapes were very gently pressed after about 8 days and as soon as fermentation was complete, the wine was lightly filtered and bottled with only a small dose of sulfites. By law, the wine could not ship from France before the morning of October 17th but then began its journey to arrive in the customer's hands near the famous ‘Nouveau Beaujolais Day’ (the third Thursday of November). But, with the more serious intent behind this wine, it will drink splendidly for its first several months in the bottle.
