Clos Culombu Suzzoni Rouge 2022 (750 ml)
The estate was founded in 1973 by Paul Suzzoni, brother of current owner Etienne Suzzoni. The 60-hectare vineyard is part of a larger 154-hectare property which faces south towards the Gulf of Calvi and Monte Grosso. The area is known locally as the Garden of Corsica and is home to the Vin de Corse-Calvi appellation, one of the finest on the island. From his organic estate, Etienne makes a range of subtle yet complex reds using Nielluccio (aka Sangiovese in Italy) and Sciacarello (a native red grape) with the addition of a little Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, and robust whites made mainly from Vermentino, This earthy and rustic red is made from 50% Nielluciu, 30% Sciacarellu, 10% Syrah and 10% Grenache and is unoaked.
A gorgeous purple-red in colour. On the nose, hints of cranberry, cherry and raspberry with notes of liquorice and sweet spice. On the palate, medium-bodied with a rich texture and balanced tannins leading to a spicy finish. Very reminiscent of the local Maquis. Great with beef stew with macaroni, ravioli made with Brocciu or Ricotta cheese or fasgioli incu funghi (white bean stew with wild mushrooms).
