100% Savagnin (selection massale)

The 2017 Domaine Grand Château-Chalon Vin Jaune is a powerful expression of Jura’s most storied appellation, born from 45-year-old Savagnin vines rooted in limestone and gray marl. The estate works the land by hand, using pickaxes to navigate the dense, rocky soils. Yields are low at 45 hl/ha, ensuring concentration and purity. After a slow 3-hour press and fermentation in a tank, the wine spends a year in a vat before aging sous voile for six years in 25-year-old 228L barrels. With no topping up, 40% of the volume evaporates over the years, making for a significant "angel’s share”, and allowing oxygen and native yeasts to sculpt its intense golden hue and complex aromas of walnut, curry spice, and salted hazelnuts. Blended back in vat for a month rest, the wine is bottled without fining, and this Vin Jaune carries the depth, energy, and oxidative beauty that define the timeless wines of Château-Chalon.

Inspired by Domaine Grand’s wines, (Parisian street artist) Bast created a bold, textured masterpiece for the Domaine - Joachim Werner artfully deconstructed it, weaving its essence into each label to match the energy & spirit behind every wine.

Nestled in the Jura, Domaine Grand is a story of family, passion, and an unwavering commitment to the land. The domaine officially took shape in 1970, when André Grand and his brothers expanded the family vineyards to 25 hectares, fully dedicating themselves to viticulture—building on the foundation laid by their father, René Grand. This set the stage for the next generation to carry the domaine forward. In 2011, Emmanuel Grand (André’s son) and Nathalie Morin took the reins, bringing a new vision to the estate. With deep roots in Jura wine—Emmanuel continuing his family’s legacy and Nathalie coming from a line of winemakers in Arbois—they sought to refine the domaine’s focus. By 2015, they had carefully selected the finest 11 hectares to farm organically, prioritizing sustainability, precision, and the purest expression of their terroir. Their vineyards stretch from Arbois to Château-Chalon, with the majority surrounding their home, featuring vines ranging from 25-50 years old to a remarkable century-old plot. Specializing in Chardonnay, Savagnin (both ouillé and oxidative), Trousseau, and Pinot Noir, Domaine Grand produces around 45,000 bottles annually. With Nathalie leading the work in the vineyards and Emmanuel in the cellar, they handle everything themselves—practicing organic farming, aging in old barrels, and using only minimal sulfites at pressing. Shaped by the Jura’s challenging climate, their wines are pure, expressive, and deeply compelling.
