Philosophy
The goal behind our flagship bottling of Pinot Noir is to make a wine that is representative of the entire farm as a whole. We achieve this by selecting small parcels of fruit from every combination of rootstock/scion, slope, soil profile, and vine age on the property. We keep all lots separate through vinification and aging to evaluate and learn how each block performs over the different vintages. We then bring them together for a harmonious blend in the bottle, full of nuance and complexity. This bottling is always the most representative of the growing year and is the most accurate representation of Johan Vineyards’ true terroir.
Vintage Notes
Following the difficult and late vintage of 2022, 2023 was a “breeze” comparatively. With relatively average budbreak and bloom dates, the rest of the summer provided ample warmth, with a warmer than average August which accelerated ripening and pushed veraison into gear. Late September and October delivered a series of rain events, allowing for small breaks in the picking schedule and a longer, drawn-out harvest. The 2023 wines have beautifully evolved tannins that continue to mature, making for powerful yet balanced wines to complement our classic Johan salinity.
Production Notes
This Pinot Noir was made from all 10 clones of Pinot Noir grown in our estate vineyard. The grapes were fermented using exclusively native yeast (both primary and malolactic), with 30 % whole-cluster fermentation. The wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, only 6% of which were new.

Morgan Beck – Johan Vineyards
Morgan's winegrowing journey began with an Enology & Viticulture certificate program in Argentina, followed by apprentice experiences in Northern CA, Central Otago NZ, Casablanca Valley in Chile, and Oregon. She has worked in vineyard management in Sonoma/Napa, gaining experience in organic/BD viticulture, along with several ‘low manipulation’ winemakers in cellars throughout California and Oregon. Seeing the care and resulting quality and expression of the fruit from these experiences, Biodynamic practices have become a foundation of Morgan's personal winegrowing approach. Her journey led her back to Oregon in 2015 for the incredible opportunity at Johan Vineyards, a Biodynamic vineyard and winery in the Van Duzer Corridor AVA focused on making estate-grown wines from a diverse array of grape varieties. It is her mission to farm a holistic system that will showcase its own identity through the wine it produces. The translation of place as well as sharing the story of the growing season is Morgan's goal when guiding each wine from grape to bottle.
