Tasting Notes
Every year our Savagnin continues to be a major topic of conversation in its structure, aromatics and ability to pair with food. The 2023 vintage has massive texture with a lovely long saline/mineral finish. Acidity hits the back of teeth and side of pallet with yellow apple, yuzu and makrut leaf driving the aromatics.
Mike's Notes
Our Savagnin represents the beginning of our grafting work at Cole Ranch to Jura varieties. Grafted in 2020 this will be our second vintage of our Savagnin. This wine and varietal type are on point from our clay soils at the ranch. Cole Ranch is home to 2 clones of Savagnin: Savagnin Vert ("green") and Savagnin Jaune ("yellow"). Both have their role in this wine as the Jaune provides aromatic flavors, and the Vert is prized for its acidity. Most of us think of Savagnin as a Vin Jaune ("yellow wine"), where the wine sits in barrel for up to 6 years under a veil (a layer of yeast called Le Voile ("the veil")) giving the wine a nutty, spiced Sherry like character. The Rootdown Savagnin is made in the Ouillé style (regularly topped) - So think fresh!
Cole Ranch
Our vineyard, Cole Ranch, is the smallest Appellation in the United States at 180 acres and 44 acres producing fruit. It sits inside of a terrarium-like microclimate and is tightly surrounded by multiple mountain ranges and hills with no other vineyards close by. Cooler and wetter than surrounding wine producing areas, its high elevation, drastic temperature swings and overall cooler climate leads to a longer growing season which preserves the acidity that is unique to Cole Ranch fruit. Cole Ranch hosts a terroir known for wines expressing vitality, earthiness, and electricity. When Mike acquired this vineyard in 2019, he began the stewardship of a vineyard that expresses its true self with grapes that thrive in its unique conditions. With steep terrain and a unique microclimate, Cole Ranch is particularly suited to growing Alpine grape varieties to create unique, thought provoking wines lead by terroir and texture.
